trumpet solo
Gary Ziek, composer
Essays is a four-movement suite for trumpet and wind ensemble.
Each movement is written in a contrasting style, featuring a wide array
of trumpet techniques.
The first movement, "Fanfare," begins with solo trumpet playing lyrical
lines over the ensemble.
The character quickly changes, as the trumpet and ensemble trade short
clarion calls, and the movement ends in a flurry of activity.
"Gallop" begins with numerous double-tonguing hurdles for the soloist.
After a short interlude with a jazz flavor, the movement races to a finish.
"Ballad" shows the lyrical side of both soloist and band.
The final movement, "Dance," is highly spirited, featuring lively melodies
and rhythms.
