Leroy Anderson, composer
Leroy Anderson was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1909 and died in
Waterbury, Connecticut in 1975.
He earned a B.A. degree in music at Harvard University in 1929.
As a student, he conducted the Harvard Band from 1928-1930.
He became the music instructor at Radcliffe College from 1930-1932 and
returned to Harvard as Band Conductor from 1932-35.
Anderson was associated with Arthur Fiedler as one of the leading arrangers
for the Boston Pops Orchestra.
He also frequently served as the orchestra’s guest conductor.
In 1947 he was commissioned by the Erin Society of Boston to write an
Irish Suite for its annual night at the Boston Pops.

Leroy Anderson’s Irish Suite salutes an American composer with
deep Boston roots.
He was associated with Arthur Fiedler and well known as one of the leading
arrangers for the Boston Pops Orchestra and also frequently served as the
orchestra’s guest conductor.
In 1947 he was commissioned by the Erin Society of Boston to write an Irish
suite for its annual night at the Pops.
The work consists of six beloved Irish airs, three of which have been
arranged for band.
