march
Kenneth Alford, composer
Kenneth Alford was as famous in England for his marches as Sousa was in
the United States.
His marches are characterized by a restrained and dignified "poetic" style.
The Mad Major march indicates a deep interest in British military
tradition.
It is a refreshing work employing soft passages as well as tasteful power.
This march was the ninth in a series of 17 marches composed by Alford during
a 39-year period beginning just before World War I.
