Trumpet Concerto in E♭ Major

(1796)

Franz Joseph Haydn, composer

This piece was written by Haydn in 1796 and marked an important stage in the development of the trumpet. Until that time, the trumpet was without valves and limited to the natural harmonics. Anton Weidinger invented the valve system that enabled the trumpet to play chromatically, and Haydn used this technological advance at the height of the career to write his "most perfect concerto."
