alto saxophone solo
(2003)
Catherine McMichael, composer
Woodland Serenade and Rondo is a concerto crafted to spotlight not
only a fine saxophone soloist, but also other outstanding solo wind players
in the ensemble.
Its premier was December 20, 2003 at the prestigious Midwest Band and
Orchestra Clinic, performed by The Woodlands (TX) High School Band, with
Brett Johnson conducting and Mr. Klock as soloist.
The serenade’s simple haunting theme demands sensitive musicality and
warm tone from the soloist and band alike.
Vibraphone, marimba, bells and wind chimes create a dreamy background
to the long-limbed melody.
In classic rondo form the second and third themes have contrasting moods
and textures.
Sass, humor and driving intensity are all part of this fast-paced rondo.
