First Suite in E♭ for Military Band, IntermezzoGustav HolstGustav Holst's First Suite in E♭ for Military Band is generally considered as the cornerstone of modern concert band music. The chaconne melody is first stated by the tuba and then is repeated many times in various musical textures. The same melody is used in the intermezzo, first as an agitated, quick figure and later as a contabile melody begun by the clarinets and then continuing throughout the band. The finale movement uses the same theme in inversion and then combines it with the original in an exciting counterpoint leading to the conclusion.Recorded 1994/10/22, William Toland conducting.
