Sonata for Marimba and Band
Peter Tanner
Sonata for Marimba and Band [notes from composer Peter Tanner] "was
composed in 1957, emanating from an assignment in modal writing by Alan
Hovhaness with whom I was studying at the time. The first performance was given
by Mitchell Peters, a fellow student at the Eastman School of Music, and now
principal percussionist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic." ... The Finale is a
rapid-fire rondo based on a repeating note figure in the Phrygian mode. Near
the end there is a cadenza which leads to a grandioso conclusion.
Recorded 1993/3/6, William Toland conducting.
