March from The Love for Three Oranges

Sergei Prokofiev

Sergei Prokofiev was one of Russia’s outstanding twentieth century composers. The catalog of his works includes symphonies, works for concert band, concertos, piano sonatas and compositions for various chamber ensembles. Two of his best known works for band are Athletic Festival March and March, Opus 99. The Love for Three Oranges was an opera composed by Prokofiev based on a play by Carlo Gozzi. The first performance of this opera, in which a prince is cursed to fall in love with three magic oranges, was presented by the Chicago Opera in 1921, conducted by the composer. The March from The Love for Three Oranges is the best known selection from the opera and, in this scoring by the composer for symphonic wind ensemble, is performed frequently by bands around the world.

Recorded 1992/10/30, William Toland conducting.
