Concerto for Tuba
Edward Gregson
Concerto for Tuba was originally written for brass band (and
subsequently for wind band and orchestra) and was commissioned by Besses
o’ th’ Barn Band in Great Britain.
It is dedicated to John Fletcher, who gave the first performance of the wind
band version in Grieg Hall, Bergin, Norway.
The Allegro deciso movement is in sonata allegro form with two
contrasting themes, the first rhythmic in character, the second lyrical.
Tuba soloist Matt Stevens is originally from Acton, Massachusetts.
In 1984 he received his Bachelor of Music in Tuba Performance in 1986.
He has been a member of the Concord Band since 1993.
Recorded 1994/3/12, William Toland conducting.
